Anxiety, under diagnosed and oftentimes over-treated by “big pharma,” will never change or get better without your personal involvement. The more energy you put into a situation the more personal satisfaction you get out of your effort. To support your energy and effort, I have created a safe and encouraging blog area to help you move forward in your life.
Rather than have a drink, toke, or a snort, to try to wipe away this ruminating anxiety by adding tools to the toolbox. Although it feels as if it is eating you alive, there are healthier ways to manage your anxiety, such as journaling. Writing Your Way to Healing and Wholeness is a guided journal, I will cover effective journaling in these first few blogs to enhance this form of art as meaningful outlet for you. Like many art forms, journaling is always an evolving process and each day either you have a new canvas to start or you are adding detail, texture, and context to what you wrote yesterday.
Not all art forms are the same; therefore, not all artists are the same. Some like working with clay and others with watercolor, while some don’t care for oils, others delve deep into the richness of color. Writing is the same way for people. For some, it would be boring just to record your daily life. However, recording your daily life may make you aware of how boring life has become for you! Thus, journaling as an “art” gets your creative juices going by supplementing your life and bringing life into the objects around you. For instance, anxiety that just won’t shut up becomes quiet, goes away, or stops for microseconds. The art of writing opens a new window of opportunity to do something different with anxiety by learning to externalize the anxiety, rather than be anxiety’s hostage.
To start externalizing your anxiety, set your timer for two minutes and close your eyes, imagine your anxiety and let it take form. What does the anxiety look like? How big? How small? What is its texture? Does it have an odor? What color or colors is it?
Once you have a clearly defined your anxiety, open your eyes, set your timer for three more minutes and write down the image of your anxiety. Take your time and really use your pen as a paintbrush and describe fully your anxiety. Take a deep breath and ask the anxiety, “What message do you have for me?” Write down what anxiety says. Notice how that message makes you feel inside of your body. Where do you feel it in your body and how would you like body to respond differently next time? Given the information from your body, write for three continuous minutes by responding to anxiety’s message to you. Continue back and forth in this dialogue. You may find the timer helpful or you may be ready to let the timer go and just keep dialoguing.
Timers are helpful tools when coping with concern or worry because anxiety enjoys being an intimidator. Anxiety enjoys its own chatter. It is constantly saying things like, “you are taking too much time,” “that was a stupid message,” and “this stupid exercise is getting your nowhere.” If you are writing while using a timer then you just keep focusing and moving on. A good analogy for me is physical therapy. While doing rehab for my knee replacement, the PT handed me a timer, I learned to hold a position for thirty seconds, one minute, and so on. The timer became my friend because when it went off I could let go. Similarly, the timer is a helpful friend while doing journal exercises.
Think about journaling as a therapy that helps you live a productive and engaged lifestyle with your friends, family, and yourself. Think about coming to your journal daily for as little as six-to- ten minutes. Then every other day add a minute. Eventually, you are doing ten to twenty-minute writing exercises every other day. That is enough if you want it to be. Some of you may write hours but that is not the usual experience of journaling folks. Six through twenty minutes is enough for personal growth and reflection. As in anything, consistency is the key.
Once a week spend a few minutes re-reading what you wrote. What was your focus? Where are you stuck? Where are you making progress? Where do you want you to focus this coming next week?
You don’t need to spend every exercise working with your anxiety, but if anxiety is a big issue for you dedicate at least one day a week externalizing it and dialoguing with the anxiety.  My new book allows you to discover many exercises.  Click on the link below to get your copy today.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:MUSIC

CHANGE YOUR MUISC -CHANGE YOUR MOOD
MUSIC

MUSIC is a powerful additive to change mood throughout your day.  Think about Christmas MUSIC and how old favorites survive year after year.  Some of the songs such as Hark the Herald the Angels Sing and Silent Night have the music re-written for better or worse from time to time, but the words remain the same.  Christmas MUSIC can make you feel eager anticipation of the holiday season and all that comes with it.   Or, Christmas Music can evoke sadness and fill you with a sense of dread.  Not everyone loves Christmas or the music that comes with it. That is not a bad thing.  It is all about personal choice.  It is up to you to pay attention and change the MUSIC you are listening to if you don’t like it.   MUSIC choice is important and I invite you to experiment with it for a week or two.   Listen to something different than you usually do.  Choose from classical, country, pop, new age and a variety of other MUSIC choices and notice how your mood shifts as you allow yourself to engage in the mystical power of MUSIC.  Reflect on your early experiences with MUSIC.  When did you first notice MUSIC and your likes and dislikes for certain MUSIC choices?  Did someone special interest you in MUSIC?  Did you discover it on your own?  Or, are you still waiting to discover how MUSIC can help you heal and enjoy. MUSIC is a powerful additive, so experiment with adding it a variety of your day-to-day activities.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:HEALING

WHOLENESS IS BEAUTIFUL
HEALING

The definition of HEALING is to make whole or restore to original health.  However, the goal of HEALING needs to surpass original health and bring a vibrant sense of well being to the whole being, body, soul, and spirit.  It is important to seek HEALING for optimal health in the three above areas.   Think about the times in your life when you have been in need of HEALING.   What were you looking for?  What did you feel you needed to be whole again?  HEALING comes in many different forms, from HEALING gardens to HEALING touch with a mixture of emotional, physical, and spiritual HEALING in between.  What HEALING do you seek now?  Does your soul ache for something more? Does your spirit thirst for a touch from the divine?  Are you facing physical illness that has you forlorn and frightened?  HEALING does not always mean fixed.  Sometimes HEALING is the process of acceptance of what is verse trying to change something to suit your temporary need.  If you accepted the situation you are currently faced with and realized you cannot change it or make it different, the very acceptance of that fact will relax you into a calm peace.  Yes, sadness might be there with you and even regret.  But those emotions will lift as you move toward acceptance.  Choosing to focus on how awful a situation is verses how real a situation is a key ingredient to reaching your own HEALING.  HEALING happens when the struggle against ceases.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:GRACE

ONE STEP OF GRACE AT A TIME
GRACE

GRACE is considered a root word to GRACEFUL and GRACIOUSNESS.  Also, from a Christian perspective GRACE is a theological word that implies God’s love and acceptance of you just the way you are, not holding you in judgment for your normal humanity.  As the TWENTY-MINUE COACH, I would like you to practice more of the theological word GRACE toward yourself, releasing your judgment and criticism of yourself for being human.  You are going to screw-up and make mistakes.  Some of those mistakes are going to be huge and others annoying.  Either way, nothing is therapeutic about beating yourself up with emotional negativity that berates you and betrays you. When you put yourself, you are practicing self-betrayal. Stop and think about that.  Those hurt feelings and broken heart by those who have hurt you in the past is no different than the pain and anguish you cause your own soul by the emotional abuse you dish out everyday at yourself.  GRACE, personal GRACIOUSNESS toward yourself is what you need.  The simple words, “I forgive myself for________,” are helpful and healing words to break the monotony of the negative drone in your head.  GRACE is an action and a movement of positive energy that allows life to flow beautifully and look regal.  Practice being regal and asserting a sense of confidence about your life and let GRACE flow from your body as well as from your mouth and heart.  GRACIOUSNESS is needed to co-exist with you and with others.  Be Gracious today.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:SHAMAN

MEDICINE PERSON
SHAMAN

The Twenty Minute Coach has written some interesting blogs about various healing traditions and today is the word SHAMAN or SHAMANISM.  This ancient practice is often misunderstood and discarded as “craziness.”  However, today in our shift of consciousness many of these ancient traditions are returning as viable practices for healing.  SHAMANS (Medicine People) can be found all over the world and come from many indigenous traditions.  Most of them have a commonality with nature, the interconnectedness of all things, energy systems, and alternative realities.  SHAMANS work with energy to manifest new things such as healing and dissolve old things such as unconscious negative belief system.  Shamans perform rituals and healing practices by working with mass and energy, often eliciting powers from animals (totems), plants (herbs) or gathering information from spirit guides from the other side.  Even though SHAMANS come from an ancient tradition of passed down knowledge it is possible for you to access that same energy if you are willing to suspend reality, as you know it.  If you ever have an opportunity to be in the company of an ancient linage SHAMAN, never pass up the opportunity.  But until that day comes, here is a SHAMANIC practice you can train in today.  Find an amulet that speaks to you. An amulet is a piece of symbolic jewelry that is worn as protection and power.  Many traditional Christians wear a cross, which is his/her symbol of protection and prayer. I wear a golden Tiger necklace, which I use daily to go through my body and hunt mutant cells and eliminate those ells from my body.  If the SHAMINC world interests you, you may enjoy Change Your Story-Change Your Life by Carl Greer.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: COLOR

CHOOSE THREE COLORS AND GO AT IT

COLOR

COLOR can be a noun or a verb.  The TWENTY-MINUTE COACH is going to use it as a verb today.   I know some of you may have negative memories about COLORING as a child and perhaps you even got in trouble for COLORING on the walls.  If you have negative memories, I invite you to put them aside and go purchase a box of crayons and some blank paper.  I want you to draw a large circle on the paper and choose three COLORS that represent how you are feeling right now, or how you feel about a certain issue.  Next, allow yourself to COLOR on the inside of the circle using those three COLORS until the circle is completely filled.  Notice how you feel after you COLOR.  Now, you can use a bright positive COLOR and COLOR the outside the circle as if you are sending positive energy toward the issue that you just COLORED.   To sit and COLOR something is a meditative exercise that relaxes the brain as you just go through the mindless act of filling the circle with COLOR.   You can also experiment by doing the same circle exercise and COLOR to music.  Choose different types of music to COLOR to.  If you are sad or grieving COLOR to sad music until you are able to release the grief or sadness with tears.  Then COLOR to some upbeat music and notice the difference.  If you are sitting and watching TV aimlessly, allow yourself to COLOR in a COLORING book while watching.  To COLOR is a healing exercise.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: WEED

OVERGROWN?
WEED

Be careful what you WEED out of your life.  It may be important to WEED out some of your toxic emotions that are hurting you.   However, it might be more important to ask those emotions, “What hurts so much that you stay so sad?”   I was pleasantly surprised to find that what might be considered WEEDS by some are actually helpful herbs, such as burdock, dandelion, goldenrod, milk thistle, St. John’s wort, and sumac are often considered WEEDS but are really healing ingredients in many herbal remedies.   Thus, it takes wisdom and education to figure out what WEED is good for you and what WEED is choking the life out of you.  WEEDS in general are not bad.  When a WEED begins to grow in your beautiful garden and choke the life out of your beans or tomatoes or even make your flowers appear weak, then it is a good idea to pull the WEEDS with manual labor or a pesticide free WEED killer.  If you are feeling stifled, smothered, or hampered by people you once thought were friends perhaps it is time to have a serious conversation with him/her.  That serious conversation can be likened to putting non-toxic pesticide on the friendship and requesting a dialogue about what is not working for you.  Perhaps you need to WEED out some of the aimless TV watching that is making you dull and stealing the vivaciousness of your daily life.  WEEDS require careful thought, mindful action, and gentle care.   Do not go through your life WEEDING out what you don’t like.  Ask, what does this WEED really need?
