Anxiety, under diagnosed and oftentimes over-treated by “big pharma,” will never change or get better without your personal involvement. The more energy you put into a situation the more personal satisfaction you get out of your effort. To support your energy and effort, I have created a safe and encouraging blog area to help you move forward in your life.
Rather than have a drink, toke, or a snort, to try to wipe away this ruminating anxiety by adding tools to the toolbox. Although it feels as if it is eating you alive, there are healthier ways to manage your anxiety, such as journaling. Writing Your Way to Healing and Wholeness is a guided journal, I will cover effective journaling in these first few blogs to enhance this form of art as meaningful outlet for you. Like many art forms, journaling is always an evolving process and each day either you have a new canvas to start or you are adding detail, texture, and context to what you wrote yesterday.
Not all art forms are the same; therefore, not all artists are the same. Some like working with clay and others with watercolor, while some don’t care for oils, others delve deep into the richness of color. Writing is the same way for people. For some, it would be boring just to record your daily life. However, recording your daily life may make you aware of how boring life has become for you! Thus, journaling as an “art” gets your creative juices going by supplementing your life and bringing life into the objects around you. For instance, anxiety that just won’t shut up becomes quiet, goes away, or stops for microseconds. The art of writing opens a new window of opportunity to do something different with anxiety by learning to externalize the anxiety, rather than be anxiety’s hostage.
To start externalizing your anxiety, set your timer for two minutes and close your eyes, imagine your anxiety and let it take form. What does the anxiety look like? How big? How small? What is its texture? Does it have an odor? What color or colors is it?
Once you have a clearly defined your anxiety, open your eyes, set your timer for three more minutes and write down the image of your anxiety. Take your time and really use your pen as a paintbrush and describe fully your anxiety. Take a deep breath and ask the anxiety, “What message do you have for me?” Write down what anxiety says. Notice how that message makes you feel inside of your body. Where do you feel it in your body and how would you like body to respond differently next time? Given the information from your body, write for three continuous minutes by responding to anxiety’s message to you. Continue back and forth in this dialogue. You may find the timer helpful or you may be ready to let the timer go and just keep dialoguing.
Timers are helpful tools when coping with concern or worry because anxiety enjoys being an intimidator. Anxiety enjoys its own chatter. It is constantly saying things like, “you are taking too much time,” “that was a stupid message,” and “this stupid exercise is getting your nowhere.” If you are writing while using a timer then you just keep focusing and moving on. A good analogy for me is physical therapy. While doing rehab for my knee replacement, the PT handed me a timer, I learned to hold a position for thirty seconds, one minute, and so on. The timer became my friend because when it went off I could let go. Similarly, the timer is a helpful friend while doing journal exercises.
Think about journaling as a therapy that helps you live a productive and engaged lifestyle with your friends, family, and yourself. Think about coming to your journal daily for as little as six-to- ten minutes. Then every other day add a minute. Eventually, you are doing ten to twenty-minute writing exercises every other day. That is enough if you want it to be. Some of you may write hours but that is not the usual experience of journaling folks. Six through twenty minutes is enough for personal growth and reflection. As in anything, consistency is the key.
Once a week spend a few minutes re-reading what you wrote. What was your focus? Where are you stuck? Where are you making progress? Where do you want you to focus this coming next week?
You don’t need to spend every exercise working with your anxiety, but if anxiety is a big issue for you dedicate at least one day a week externalizing it and dialoguing with the anxiety.  My new book allows you to discover many exercises.  Click on the link below to get your copy today.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: ORGANIC

GOOD EARTH AND WATER RESTORE US
ORGANIC

To eat or not to eat ORGANIC is a very important question these days and it is riddled with confusion.  ORGANIC is more expensive and as a result not an easy buy in for those struggling financially.  ORGANIC is confusing and reading the label seems to make it more confusing at times.  However, the more you learn the more sense it may make to make the switch.   I found a simple site: www.organic-center.com that keeps it simple and helpful.  However, in order for you to switch to ORGANIC you need a mental buy in that reaches into your belief system.  If you truly do not believe ORGANIC is necessary you are going to consistently choose non-organic because of price point and convenience.  Thus, rather than me or any other medical expert telling you what you should do, take personal responsibility and research the benefits of ORGANIC food and if you still do not believe it is important then don’t do it.  If you want to run your own experiment to see if eating ORGANIC makes a difference, then clean out the garbage food in your pantry and refrigerator and go ORGANIC completely for thirty days.  You may not notice a difference, but that difference may become very apparent once you add garbage food back to your diet.  It really takes less than thirty days to notice the difference.  ORGANIC can become an investment that you make in becoming healthier and making more responsible choices for your health.  If you don’t have your health, you have nothing.  Think about it and then act on it.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:KEY

THE KEY TO LIVE IS LIVING IT

KEY

It is hard to get into your home without a KEY.  Your car will not start without a KEY.   The KEY to your safe protects your valuables and as you get older (if you are like me) you spend a bit of time trying to locate your KEYS.   The KEY to this post is to make sure you know they KEY points to making your life meaningful today.  It is KEY to your health that you take responsibility for it and do not pawn your body off on your doctor.  Eating healthy and reading labels is KEY to you being in charge of what goes in your mouth.  Exercise is also KEY to feeling good about your body and keeping it in top shape.  Another KEY to a meaningful daily life is realizing that you are enough.   Quit trying to make yourself fit into someone else’s mold, be exquisitely all of who you are. Stop hiding.  Open the door of your heart and walk into life.  You are the KEY ingredient.  No one else can be you and the painful truth is no one else can live your life for you.  You are the KEY to your happiness and no one else.  Life is made up of KEY ingredients but you are the master KEY.  You unlock all the doors and you choose how to deal with what comes at you.  The KEY is to stand up and be responsible.  The KEY to your health, finances, relationships, connections, and life’s direction is in your heart.  Open it and live on.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: TASTE

ENJOY DECADENCE OFTEN
TASTE

TASTE is very personal and inclusive of food choices, clothing choices, and home choices.  What do you have a TASTE for?  What foods do you enjoy?  Over this next week choose three foods that you really enjoy.  Practice a mindful TASTING exercise by preparing that food just the way you want.  Then enjoy eating those foods, slowly and with attention to the texture, palate, and taste as you enjoy each bite.  Taking time to really TASTE your food is so important to the enjoyment and health of your well-being.  What is your TASTE in clothes?  What are your favorite colors?  TASTE is personal and you get decide what makes you feel good.  Moving toward the clothes that help you feel good build your self-confidence and personal enjoyment. Assert yourself when it comes to what you like and what you don’t like. Don’t let yourself be talked into clothes just because they are designer clothes when you feel like a mushroom in them.  Personal TASTE is also important when it comes to the décor and comfort of your home.  Personal space and enjoying your environment is so important to your daily mood.  If you have a TASTE for the Southwest and your home is decorated in Old World you probably feel out of place in your safe environment.  It is important to decorate according to your TASTE.  If you and your partner have different TASTE, discover ways to negotiate and share both of your styles within your livable space.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: JUICE

NOT ALL JUICE IS GOOD FOR YOU!

JUICE

The TWENTY MINUTE COACH is discovering that “J” words are not great motivators for blogging; however, the word JUICE has some possibilities. The word JUICE provides a multi-topic format. It is common to think that drinking JUICE is healthier than drinking soda.  But not all JUICE is created equal. Next time you reach for the orange JUICE, grape JUICE or the cranberry JUICE,read the label.  Check out the sugar content, the additives, and the carbohydrate count.  You may be shocked.  Then check out the contents of a typical soda drink.  Compare the two drinks. Not much difference in terms of healthy choice. If you are the industrious type you might want to consider JUICING.  JUICING fresh fruit and vegetables is healthier than buying JUICE. I know that my basic personality make-up, finds no personal interest in JUICING; however I admire those that do. If a persondoes not have interest in something, he/she will not move toward it.  JUICE in the English language is not all about food. JUICE is also about motivation.  You have heard the phrase, “Get those creative JUICES going.” What is it that motivates you to be creative?  Those who love to JUICE fruits and vegetables feel creative as they follow their inner JUICINESS. Don’t allow yourself to become a coach potato, JUICE up your life with something different to keep yourself moving.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:HEALING

WHOLENESS IS BEAUTIFUL
HEALING

The definition of HEALING is to make whole or restore to original health.  However, the goal of HEALING needs to surpass original health and bring a vibrant sense of well being to the whole being, body, soul, and spirit.  It is important to seek HEALING for optimal health in the three above areas.   Think about the times in your life when you have been in need of HEALING.   What were you looking for?  What did you feel you needed to be whole again?  HEALING comes in many different forms, from HEALING gardens to HEALING touch with a mixture of emotional, physical, and spiritual HEALING in between.  What HEALING do you seek now?  Does your soul ache for something more? Does your spirit thirst for a touch from the divine?  Are you facing physical illness that has you forlorn and frightened?  HEALING does not always mean fixed.  Sometimes HEALING is the process of acceptance of what is verse trying to change something to suit your temporary need.  If you accepted the situation you are currently faced with and realized you cannot change it or make it different, the very acceptance of that fact will relax you into a calm peace.  Yes, sadness might be there with you and even regret.  But those emotions will lift as you move toward acceptance.  Choosing to focus on how awful a situation is verses how real a situation is a key ingredient to reaching your own HEALING.  HEALING happens when the struggle against ceases.
