YOUR LIFE A-Z:RUDOLF

RUDOLF THE RED NOSE REINDEER

It is not Christmas without the story of RUDOLF.  The story about how RUDOLF came into existence is equally as heart warming.  Doing right by others is exactly what Montgomery Wards Department Store did for Robert May, the 1939 author of this fascinating story.  May was a copyright employee for Montgomery Wards and was known to have a proclivity to write children’s stories.  They commissioned him to write a story-coloring book to give away at Christmas time and he came up RUDOLF the Red Nosed Reindeer. May was bullied as a child for being small and understood that the underdog was often just the person needed to accomplish important tasks.  In the story, RUDOLF was asleep in his bed when Santa arrived to give out his gifts.  Santa noticed RUDOLF’s flashing nose through RUDOLF’S window and Santa woke RUDOLF up and asked him to guide his sleigh through the foggy night.  May did not own the copyright to this fast growing holiday story and several years later when May was under great financial stress because of his wife’s medical treatment for cancer, Montgomery Ward signed over the copyright of RUDOLF to May.  May was able to provide a comfortable life for himself and his motherless 4-year-old daughter from that time forward.  I invite you to use this story to ask yourself, “Whom do you need to do right by?”  “Whose life can you make easier this holiday season?”  “How can your disability become an asset to others this holiday season?”  RUDOLF was created out of nothing and became a very important figure, what can you create out of nothing to make a difference?”

YOUR LIFE A-Z:QUAINT

Create Memories out  of QUAINT  Traditions
QUAINT

QUAINT is defined as picturesque, attractive, charming and even old-fashion.  Thus, when I think about a QUAINT Christmas, I remember fondly the real bubble lights on our family Christmas tree.  Those lights were magical and I could watch them for hours on end, mesmerized by the bubbles that endlessly climbed to the top of each light.  What are some of your QUAINT memories about your past holidays?  Do you have a tradition from your childhood that you still carry on in your family today?  What is it about that tradition that makes you feel connected to QUAINT times of the past?  Carving out time in the hustle and bustle of this over commercialized season to make a Christmas evening at home QUAINT will help you build memories with your family for years to come. What could be better than turning on some traditional Christmas music, turning on the Christmas tree, and sitting around the living room telling Christmas stories and remembering your favorite Christmas with your children and friends?  That is beginning of building a picturesque and QUAINT Christmas.  You can make some popcorn, Christmas cookies, and hot chocolate and turn off all electronics for two hours while engaging each other in conversations and story.  Storytelling is a QUAINT activity that builds relationships, exercises creativity, and enhances connection among family members taking advantage of personal time that will never be forgotten.  Set aside at least one designated evening to be with family and set the stage to create an old-fashion QUAINT Christmas tradition.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:ADVENT

Purple, Pink, White are Important Colors of Royalty at this Time
ADVENT

Now, don’t skip this important word if you think it only applies to birth of Christ. Yes, it is true ADVENT is a very important word for Christians during the Christmas holiday.  ADVENT starts on the fourth Sunday before December 25. In the western church it is a time of anticipation, celebration, and remembrance of the birth of Christ and Christ’s second coming.  It is time full of celebration, festive worship, inspiring music and colors of purple and blue.  However, the word ADVENT means the arrival of a notable person, event, or thing.  This is the perfect time to speak about your personal ADVENT.  IT IS TIME TO SHOW UP FOR YOUR OWN LIFE.   Begin to plan, anticipate, and celebrate your ADVENT, your second coming.  IF you are feeling that life has passed you by or has become too difficult then there is no better time than now to plan a personal ADVENT.  Show up and be born again with the zeal to live a quality and meaningful life.  You are the only person that can make this so.  No one else can live your life for you and no one else can make you happy.  It is time to stop waiting with painful pregnancy pains and to give birth to your life the way you want it.  ADVENT is a time of preparation for birth.  ADVENT is a time in the darkness of winter that you focus on the stars in the sky and stop complaining about being born in a stable.  Get on with it. Birth yourself and celebrate the ADVENT (coming) of the next chapter of your existence.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:HOLIDAY

REJOICE AND CELEBRATE EVERY HOLIDAY
HOLIDAY

The HOLIDAY season comes at the best time of the year, starting in fall and finishing in the heart of winter.  From Halloween until Valentine’s Day there is a HOLIDAY to look forward to with opportunity for plenty of hallmark moments.  However, the HOLIDAY season can be marred with ghosts from times past that you need to clear out in order to celebrate and take every opportunity to be fully alive in the HOLIDAY season.  Hallmark and commercialism have over-burdened and over stimulated many of us with all of the glitz that HOLIDAY’S are becoming burdensome surrounded by clouds of should and have-to.  Do not allow commercialism to ruin the enjoyment and zest that can be yours during this magical time of the year.  Choose the HOLIDAY you enjoy the most and celebrate it fully the way you that brings you the most enjoyment.  Then for the rest of the HOLIDAYS choose one part of the HOLIDAY to truly participate in.  For instance if you live near family and have to do HOLIDAY meals on Christmas morning, afternoon, and evening as well as a big celebration on Christmas eve, you know that already.  So rather than resist it pre-plan and prepare what you are going to take, organize it and have it off of your to do list. As a result of these obligations, trim down on other HOLIDAY have-to obligations and learn to say no to the cookie exchange and last minute wrapping and gift buying.  Pre-plan the obligations and enjoy the HOLIDAY that you love the most.

Labyrinth Mondays: Necessary Journeys

It is a journey to Bethlehem from Nazareth which is about 80 miles, traveled with donkey and on foot would be at least a four day journey, perhaps a week given that Joseph was an older man and Mary was with child, not any child, but the Christ Child. That is the traditional Christmas story. In our Labyrinth Mondays, we have been talking about the power of the journey. There are many journeys in our lives that we just do not want to take but for whatever that makes sense to us at the time, the journey feels like a must. Mary and Joseph had to take the Journey as they had to pay taxes. It was necessary.

The 3-Day Breast Cancer walk of 60 miles has become a phenomenon in America. It is a journey that breast cancer patients, their friends and relatives take to punctuate the power of survival and the hope for a cure. It is necessary!

It is only three days before Christmas and anticipation of Santa is in the air, the jolly fat guy that brings us gifts of cheer, journeying all over the globe in a twenty-four hour period to make children happy with delight that they are not forgotten and are gifted just because it is Christmas. It is necessary!

Really, Dr. Dilley, the journey of Santa Claus is necessary? I know it is easy to become cynical about the craziness of the perfect Hallmark Christmas. However, we have made it crazy, not Santa Claus. We have not dealt with are neurosis, our perfectionism, our need to be better, nor our competitive nature, such as “My Christmas lights are better than yours.” As Americans, Christmas has become crazy not because of commercialism, but because our neurosis, our unhealed selves have allowed ourselves to be seduced by more and better, not because the 1% is trying to make a bigger profit. We have contributed to this fiasco of “It is Necessary!” It is not the Jolly Fat Man’s fault.

So what now? Relax, get back on track. Take back a little bit of you for Christmas. Step back to the spirit of the Journey. Make a child smile. Make an adult feel appreciated. Make a loved one know that they are important. Take a step into the center and change turn down the throttle on Christmas chaos. It is necessary!

To have help in getting your life back into perspective, becoming centered, and moving forward, then please join me on the Labyrinth workshop January 7, 2012. That is the day after Epiphany. Come and move forward away from the chaos. Go to www.psycotherapyunlimited.com to register for the workshop today.
