YOUR LIFE A-Z:RUDOLF

RUDOLF THE RED NOSE REINDEER

It is not Christmas without the story of RUDOLF.  The story about how RUDOLF came into existence is equally as heart warming.  Doing right by others is exactly what Montgomery Wards Department Store did for Robert May, the 1939 author of this fascinating story.  May was a copyright employee for Montgomery Wards and was known to have a proclivity to write children’s stories.  They commissioned him to write a story-coloring book to give away at Christmas time and he came up RUDOLF the Red Nosed Reindeer. May was bullied as a child for being small and understood that the underdog was often just the person needed to accomplish important tasks.  In the story, RUDOLF was asleep in his bed when Santa arrived to give out his gifts.  Santa noticed RUDOLF’s flashing nose through RUDOLF’S window and Santa woke RUDOLF up and asked him to guide his sleigh through the foggy night.  May did not own the copyright to this fast growing holiday story and several years later when May was under great financial stress because of his wife’s medical treatment for cancer, Montgomery Ward signed over the copyright of RUDOLF to May.  May was able to provide a comfortable life for himself and his motherless 4-year-old daughter from that time forward.  I invite you to use this story to ask yourself, “Whom do you need to do right by?”  “Whose life can you make easier this holiday season?”  “How can your disability become an asset to others this holiday season?”  RUDOLF was created out of nothing and became a very important figure, what can you create out of nothing to make a difference?”

YOUR LIFE A-Z:PRESENTS

GIVE THE GIFT OF LIGHT
PRESENTS Under the Tree
As we are learning together, most of our traditions come from Germany with pagan origins, hi-jacked by the Church to bring people to Christianity.  I would speak to the issue of the Church as opportunists, but that would not speak to the spirit of the season, so I will stick to Advent and using this time of the year to truly reflect on the opportunity that the Christmas Season gives us to connect to other people.  We know the Magi brought gifts to the Christ Child.  We know that in the dark season of winter, Europeans brought each other gifts of food, Yule logs, and other gifts that represented life.  I learned that the tradition of lavish PRESENTS under the tree really began when German Prince Albert married Queen Victoria of England.  Queen Victoria had fond memories of her childhood when her German mother and British father placed PRESENTS under the tree for their children. Queen Victoria developed fond memories of this time and she and her German husband carried on the tradition in their royal family. Beautiful pictures of their PRESENTS under the tree made their way into the paper.  The wealthy middle class adopted the idea of the PRESENTS and today it has become an opportune time for merchants.  I invite you to personalize the tradition for yourself and your family.  Create ways this Christmas (and Hanukkah) to make PRESENTS meaningful and mindful. Choose PRESENTS that make a heartfelt connection to those you choose to gift.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: FUTURE

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
FUTURE

The FUTURE is a space in time that is not yet.  The decisions you make today affect your FUTURE.  The choices you make today help create your FUTURE.  However, it is useless to worry about the FUTURE and absolutely silly to think that you can control the FUTURE by the choices and decisions you make today.  The FUTURE is full of the unknown.   Being anxious about the FUTURE serves you no purpose other than to damage the presence of today.  The fact remains that the FUTURE is a double-edged sword that must be prepared for but not counted on.  If we live for the FUTURE, truly you miss the joy of today.  If you ignore the FUTURE completely then perhaps you are living recklessly in the present.   The Twenty-Minute Coach has posted quite a bit about finances, health, and the necessity to have a well-planned and structured life to obtain the most out of today.  If you ignore planning today then you will be like a careless squirrel that has no food for winter and becomes a victim to the fox who is lurking and waiting for the hungry squirrel to come down from his tree in search of food.  If you prepare for the FUTURE by being wise about money and health today then you will be prepared to weather the storms of weather, health and stock markets of the FUTURE.   Being grateful today makes the Future a brighter and happier place to be tomorrow.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:QUILT

USE YOUR RESOURCES TO CREATE THE COLOR IN YOUR LIFE

QUILT

Yes, QUILT.   Do you have a favorite QUILT in your closet?  What makes that QUILT your favorite?  Was it the person that made if for you?  Or, if you purchased the QUILT, is it the theme or the colors that attracted you. Some people are talented and enjoy the art of QUILT making and others of us admire his/her art but feel as if we just cannot make something that is so intricate and time consuming.  That may very well be the case but today I want to introduce an art form of QUILT making that each of us can do.  Get an 8 ½ by 11-inch piece of paper and one side; write a list of 19 things for which you are thankful.  Once, you have reached 19, quit.   Look at the words you have written and allow your feelings of gratitude remember a situation that is connected to each word on the list.  Next, you have a choice of two options.  If you have a bunch of magazines at your disposal, some glue and scissors then search the magazine for pictures of each of your words on your list.  Once you collect 19 pictures (not the written words-only pictures) then carefully glue them on to the front of the paper creating your own QUILT of gratitude.  If option #1, sounds tedious and too much trouble, no problem, then choose 19 different colors from a crayon box and color and create a shape and color it in until every inch of your paper is covered.  Viola, you have created a QUILT of gratitude and practiced mindfulness at the same time.

YOUR LIFE A-Z SIMPLIFY

KEEP IT SIMPLE

SIMPLIFY

SIMPLIFY! SIMPLIFY! SIMPLIFY.  It will be a lot easier to be Neat if you SIMPLIFY your life.  SIMPLIFY the thing in your life that is currently driving you crazy.  What is it?  We all have something that we keep grinding away at and never feel as if any progress is made.  Here is a short check-list to get you thinking:  budget, household chores; relationships (partner, child, family member, friend); spiritual life; hobby; cooking; and the list goes on and on.  Choose one thing to SIMPLIFY today.  For example, SIMPLIFY your schedule.  Take a look at what you try to cram into one day and organize it.  Prioritize what has to be done and then add what you would also like to get done today. Balance the list with some positive actions so that SIMPLIFY does not become a task–master.  Manage your time to make the things happen that must happen.  Where are you wasting time or adding just one more thing that is creating stress or chaos?  Eliminate it.  That unnecessary drive through Starbucks is going to cost you at least ten minutes if not longer depending on the line.  Skip it and stay focused so you free up some time rather than cram twelve hours of things to do into eight.  Slow down and take some things off of what you think of as “must–have, must-do” list.  That will SIMPLIFY your day.  Ask yourself how much of what is on this list do you dread.  Eliminate one of them and reframe the others into positives.  Doing this will help you enjoy the day more.

YOUR LIFE A-Z MANAGE

Rise and Shine.  Time to Wake up and Get Going

MANAGE

Yes, MANAGE your life in all things.  MANAGE your Budget. MANAGE your time. MANAGE your health.  MANAGE your life as if you are getting paid to be the CEO of your life.  Chief Executive Officer’s get paid big bucks because the buck stops with her/him.  The responsibility rests on the CEO’s shoulders the same as how you live your life rests on top of your shoulders.  In reality you are the CEO and the buck stops with you.  Thus, begin to MANAGE your life as if your life depends on it because it does.  MANAGE your life in all things.  Manage it for more joy, happiness, and peace of mind.  Create the assets you need to feel comfortable and safe and learn to live joyfully within your means.  What does it mean to MANAGE?  It means to Analyze, think, plan, Fit, and make Effort to have the life and lifestyle you want. MANAGE the way you approach your year, your month, and your day.  As a result you will have a life that develops a sense of purpose, peace, and possibilities. Boredom will subside and Adventure will ebb and flow around the edges of a Meaningful life that is well MANAGED.  Take a minute now to examine the quality of your life and ask yourself what will work better and more efficiently in your life if you, as you the CEO, are in charge of that area?

YOUR LIFE A-Z RESURRECTION

RESURRECTION:Walk through your defensive walls!

RESURRECTION MAKES LIFE NEW AGAIN

The Twenty Minute Coach thought it would be appropriate to speak about the power of personal RESURRECTION on this Easter Sunday.  Each of you have experienced very personal crucifixion stories in our lives, but have we allowed those stories to debilitate us or create opportunities for personal RESURRECTION?  In the traditional story Jesus appears to look the same, even showing the scares from the crucifixion.   However, he has different abilities than He had previously.  You have different abilities after your own personal crucifixion too.  You have the ability to be wiser and more courageous if you choose to take advantage of your pain and allow it create a new you, a RESURRECTED you.  Your story is just a piece of the tapestry of your life.  It does not define how you “are” but it can help you create a newer improved you.  RESURRECTION would be pointless if we came back the same and the painful stories in your would be useless if you did not use them to RESURRECT ourselves.   One of the things Jesus reportedly was able to do after his RESURRECTION that he could not do before was walk through walls. In our psychological nature, we put up “emotional walls” that keep people out and equally separate us from others.   We do this out of our woundedness and shame.  If we allow the painful stories of our life to RESURRECT us from our repeated past and do things new then we can walk through the walls we set up between us and others.  I invite you to walk through a wall and connect with someone you have separated from and I invite you to use this RESURRECTION Sunday to do that.

YOUR LIFE A-Z FOSTER

DON'T MISS THE NUANCES

FOSTER

Yes, today you have full permission to work on the embodiment of your idea, dream, goal, and personal happiness.  What do you need to get it done?  How you cultivate, nurture, and strengthen the reality of your goal? To FOSTER your dream you must spend time with it every day.  FOSTER your dreams by spending time imagining the outcome.  Do not focus so much on what is missing from your dream but the finished picture when you have completely embodied your dream.
For instance, let’s say financial security is one of your goals.  You have to know specifically what that is for you.  After DEFINING it, you need to know the benefits of achieving it. List three benefits on how your life will be changed positively by reaching your financial security.  It is not that your bank account will be flush, but rather what are the personal benefits of being out of debt or having a savings account that will take care of you if something were to happen?  One benefit is an inner sense of security that you don’t have to worry when it is time for tires to be replaced on your car because you have spent time fostering a real financial independence.  FOSTER the outcome of financial security and focus the true benefits of having financial security.  Your life changes by making room for what you want.  Working a budget becomes fun when you see that saving money makes life lighter, brighter, and daily life becomes very pleasantly purposeful!

YOUR LIFE A-Z EMBODY

EMBODY

Yesterday’s word was DEFINE.  Today is EMBODY.  Embody your desires, dreams, and goals.  Especially embody your happiness.  Happiness is not an illusion but neither is it a destination, it is a space inside of us.  We can embody it by giving it concrete form.  We want to spend our time exploring what you will look like and feel like embodying happiness.  Spend time thinking about how differently you will feel if you make what you see on the inside a reality on the outside.

Taking an idea, goal or dream and making it real is the act of EMBODIMENT.  Your brain and your body are connected and interdependent on each other.  Imagine in your mind’s eye a situation that made you experience happiness.  Notice that the mental image makes your face light up with a smile.  When you reach your goal or establish your inner space of happiness what will it be like?  Flesh it out.  Create a vision board of happiness.  Go through magazines and clip out photos of what your happiness looks like.  Glue those pictures on a piece of poster board.  Place the board somewhere you can see it often.

Later today revisit the board and really look at each picture you chose.  What does that picture have to do with your happiness or goal?  How can you make that picture a reality?  List three to seven steps you will have to do to make that picture an outer reality in your daily life.  Then repeat that step with each picture.  What you are doing in this simple exercise is creating space inside of yourself to embody your happiness, dreams, or goals. You are making the life you want real.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: CONQUEST

IN THE MIDST OF A STORM BE CAREFREE

CONQUEST

Yes, conquests are important in life.  We need to learn to conquer the things that bother us, worry us, or bring us down.  Sometimes the best way to do that is through acceptance.  Peaceful acceptance sometimes stops the worry when we realize there is nothing we can do to change or control a situation.  That acceptance is probably the most difficult thing you have had to do in your life.  Accepting a child’s choices that are not in his/her best interest is a conquest more painful than probably than any other.  Learning that you cannot control your adult child’s drug or alcohol use is a painful conquering and not one that parents easily accept.  You know there is an acceptance when you feel a sense of inner peace inside of yourself that you have not experienced.  Then you have fully practiced the definition of conquests: the control, defeat, or overthrow of that which is invading you.  The conquest to acceptance requires energy, it does not happen by passivity.  It is defined, direct, and destined to create a place of peace in your heart and life where you can not imagine it being.  Also, conquests requires repetition.  Repetition of the same behaviors, attitudes, and actions that continue to make room for a peaceful place inside, in the midst of emotional pain.  Acceptance is the ammunition required to conquer all that matters to us so that we can live abundantly peaceful lives regardless of the chaos and pain around us.

YOUR LIFE A-Z ZEST

ZEST CAN BE MESSY. BUT WORTH THE EFFORT

ZEST
Finishing our first 26 Days on the Twenty Minute Coach ends with the word ZEST. Zest is that which enhances flavor, adding taste to what already exists.  Part of this year is building on what is already working for you.  What are your resources, strengths, accomplishments?  Take some time today to list them and really enjoy drinking them in.  It is easier to move forward in our lives, using the energy of the positive, rather than listening to the negative chatter that goes on like irritating static in the background.  Positive builds more positive.  Negative builds more negativity and is destructive.  Choose one thing from your positive list that you want to enhance over the next few days.  Add some flavoring to your choice.  What can you do to make it better?

Zest, such as lemon or orange, creates a more enjoyable, gourmet taste to any of its desirable dishes.  What will help you feel more passionate about what you are already doing?  That in and of itself is the zest of life!  Enjoying more of what we love to do, and doing it better than we can even imagine is part of creating the life we love to live.  This is the year to get past just managing or coping with life.  It is also a year of understanding hope is a very passive energy that lures us into standing still and wanting things to change for us.  Embrace the change by adding some ZEST to your already successful start to the year.

Your Life A-Z FETCH

You Don't Always Have to Run After Something. Just Get It!

FETCH

What a fun word!  Yes, we can have fun this year.  We can play with the alphabet while we strengthen our emotional inner core.  In physical exercise, it is important to build your core, as it helps with balance and overall strength.  So today FETCH something you need.  What do you need to expand and develop what you have been working on the past two days?  Today, go get it.  Whatever it is, go for it.  Stop the excuses.  “I can’t afford it, do it, or have it.”   Take one step towards fetching that goal.  Put some money aside beginning right now or do what action it is that you been putting off.  Do it right now.  There is never a better time than now to FETCH WHAT YOU NEED.  Go get it. NOW.

Your LifeA-Z DEVELOP

Well-Developed Nest Building on What The Wasp Started Just Keeps Growing.

DEVELOP

Yes, develop the thoughts and ideas that you have been wondering about.  Build on what already exist and what is working in your life.  Nourish it, like fertilizer on a tree, so it can bloom fully and deeply bringing new life to old works.  You do not have to recreate the wheel.  Examine your life and ask yourself what do you like about what is working?  Then establish a plan to develop those positive things and accentuate them this year.  Create a three-step action plan outlined below to grow, mature, nourish, and enhance the parts of your life that already work well for you. In doing so, you will also enable them to work better.
If you are not happy with anything in your life, you have fallen into a place of apathy.  In order to move out of apathy, make yourself list three things that are working in your life.  Did you pay your rent or mortgage?  What plan can you develop to make that a positive choice eliciting a positive feeling?  Force yourself to list one positive action you have taken toward change and develop it further.  And lastly, force yourself to write down a desire that you have been ignoring.  List it and develop it.  If you work this Twenty-Minute Coach Your Life A-Z you will discover positive changes blooming for you in a few months.
