YOUR LIFE A-Z:MEEK

                                              MEEK

Controlled Strength...Be Who You Are
MEEK is a word that showed up on my personal Facebook recently.  I then realized how misunderstood the word MEEK is.   Jesus reportedly said in Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the MEEK because they shall inherit the earth.”  The Greek meaning of the word MEEK, means, “strength under control.”  It does not mean anything like the uneducated connotations people place on it today, such as weak, sissy, or spineless.  Remember, King Herod was supposed to be powerful and in control of his kingdom, but he slaughtered innocent children because of his insecurity and anxiety.  MEEK people are curious.  A MEEK person comes to the table to see what he/she can do to serve and make things better because he/she knows that problems need to be resolved not slaughtered.  MEEK people are not just humble they are powerful and intelligent.  If you were to inherit the earth, how would you go about making the necessary changes needed for peace to be possible?  When does your family need controlled strength to help heal a negative family situation?  You can sit back passively and wait for the holiday season to be over, or you can practice MEEKNESS this holiday season and actually begin to change the negative energy that might show up during this time of celebration and magic.  MEEKNESS reminds us to let go of angry control and relax into letting each person be his/her own unique self.  You don’t need to be the judge.  Let go and practice being MEEK in the true sense of the word.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:VELOCITY

SPEED AND DIRECTION MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

VELOCITY

You may or not remember from math classes that VELOCITY is the speed and direction an object is moving.  For my brain it is a fairly complicated mathematic equation, but the essence of VELOCITY is important in helping you understand the work of change.  To have constant VELOCITY is to maintain constant speed and direction.  The operative word here is constant.  It is impossible when we you are initiating a change to maintain constant speed and direction.  For example, think about how many times you have set out to change your eating patterns and then found yourself invited to a party where you will be tempted with pretty food not on your list.  That example is called a curve in mathematical language.  Thus VELOCITY changes because the speed to negotiated the curve decreases and the direction changes.  What is really important for you to grasp is that once the curve is negotiated the speed accelerates to handle the adjustment that must be made to navigate the curve safely.   You will need to increase your desire to change when curves are coming at you.  Thus, when you are tempted to stay the same, regress, or toss your important decision to the wind, increase your speed in order that the VELOCITY (determination) for change accelerates.  Have a plan to stick to your new goal even when the road to change has many curves, some expected and many unexpected.  Do not let the curves slow you down. Maintain your VELOCITY by using pre-planning to negotiate difficult choices.  VELLOCITY is necessary for change.  Use it wisely.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: THOUGHTS

THOUGHTS...SO MANY OF THEM
THOUGHTS

THOUGHTS are funny because they seem to have a life of their own.  During the night, sometimes it seems impossible to turn THOUGHTS off.  Strangely, at other times it seems hard to turn THOUGHTS on.  What are your THOUGHTS?  Have you bothered to get to know them?  Do you know what your THOUGHTS are about politics, spirituality, or your purpose on this earth?  Do you bring your THOUGHTS to a conclusion?  Here is a secret about compulsive THOUGHTS. Compulsive THOUGHTS are those THOUGHTS  that go round and round in your head.  It is important to bring your THOUGHTS to a conclusion.  Finish the story.  If your THOUGHTS are harassing you then bring the thought to an end point.  Learn to ask yourself, “What is the worse thing that will happen if my THOUGHTS come true?  Than ask, “So what?” Next tell your THOUGHT what you will do (what action you will take if X happens).  By completing the circle of THOUGHT with an ending then the THOUGHT stops.  The brain needs an answer and sometimes any answer will do.  THOUGHT stopping and THOUGHT changing is challenging and it takes a disciplined mind to intervene and tame the THOUGHTS to go in the direction you want them to go.  Ask yourself,  “What is it that my THOUGHTS want me to pay attention to?”   It is important to understand that since your THOUGHTS seem to have a life of their own that you must learn to manage your THOUGHTS rather than allowing them to ruin your day or steal precious opportunities or moments!

YOUR LIFE A-Z:ZEALOUS

FOCUS ON YOUR GOAL
ZEALOUS

What are you ZEALOUS about?  What makes you care?  What gets your adrenalin going and get up off the couch to make a difference?  I am a child of the sixties and everything mattered, the Vietnam War, racism, personal freedoms and those causes rocked the world as we knew it.  Then I noticed that in the nineties when I was teaching that it seemed to me that no one cared.  During our first war with Iraq, not one college protest made the news.  During our second war of “Shock and Awe,” young people didn’t seem to notice that for the first time in our history, we invaded another country.  But finally, a change seems to be brewing.  Alicia Keys, the thirty-three year old singer is showing a ZEALOUS spirit with her knew song, “We Are Here” Her ZEALOUS spirit is raising a voice of compassion, connection and caring.  Her ZEALOUS energy is taking political action and beginning a grass roots movement to make a difference. Let’s face it, Maya Angelou is gone and most of the activists from the sixties are dead.  It is time for a new ZEALOUS energy to take over and bring America back and make it even greater than it ever has been.  Moving the mountains of apathy and greed is going to take thousands of ZEALOTS with ZEALOUS energy that will not be stopped until change is accomplished at the very basic heart and soul of humanity in this country.  Give yourself permission to be ZEALOUS today and join a cause, any cause, with all of your heart.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:SEASONS

EVERY ONE IS BEAUTIFUL

SEASONS

SEASONS are so refreshing.  Fall is my favorite SEASON.  What is yours?  SEASONS add a variety to the rhythm of life.  Can you imagine having an entire year of summer or winter?   That would be so boring.  Once you identify your favorite SEASON, ask yourself what are your favorite things to do during this SEASON?  SEASONS, especially favorite ones, can provide a change of pace, surrounding you with an aliveness that you just can’t create the other times of the year.  However, no SEASON needs to be hated.  Rain- storms and beaches can be fully enjoyed in the summer.  Snow, skiing, and fireplaces add ambiance and specialty foods to your winter.  The SEASON of spring brings you new life, green, and a sense of self-renewal of spring cleaning and de-cluttering.  Fall brings a chill to the air, colorful trees, and wonderful holidays like Halloween.  The SEASON calls you to the outside to hike, to see colors, to experience the crispness of the weather and taste the delicious fall flavors, such as pumpkin, sweat potatoes, and cinnamon.  The harvest is full and it is time to enjoy the richness of flavors, pumpkin carving, and dressing up in a Day of Dead costumes.  The SEASONAL change alerts you to how your lives are also SEASONAL.  Developmental stages mimic the SEASONS of the year.  A young child goes through very different stages every six months.  If you are being driven crazy by a SEASON, just wait for a few months, and the SEAON will change.

YOUR LIFE A-Z: ZEUS

DISCOVER YOUR INNER ZEUS
ZEUS
Get your ZEUS on!  ZEUS was the god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods in Greek mythology.  He was known as the lord of the sky and the rain god and his weapon was a thunderbolt.  ZEUS, in his deity, was an advocate for the underdog and a thunderous presence against the bad guys.  If you recognized the ZEUS power within you, you too could be an advocate for those around you.  As ZEUS you could advocate for positive change because you have a passion for certain things to change.  As ZEUS you can act on your own behalf and use ZEUS like thunder to accomplish change in your own life.  ZEUS was the god of the sky thus it gave him great perspective on all that he viewed.  ZEUS used his perspective with wisdom.  When you have a perspective on something that could make a situation better do you use it or do you remain silent?  Or are you easily discouraged when others criticize your idea or ask difficult questions?  ZEUS found answers for difficult questions and was never discouraged by criticism.  His inner passion moved him to action in powerful ways and the other gods respected him.  Some gods feared him and stayed out of his way.  Other gods were jealous of his power and sought to fight him, but ZEUS prevailed.  ZEUS was a wise warrior and lived his life according to that wisdom.  You can too.

YOUR LIFE A-Z:WHEN

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO BE YOU?
WHEN

When is an important word because WHEN allows us to put a start and stop time on any project.  Without the word WHEN added to any project, idea, or dream usually nothing happens.  WHEN are you going to change?  WHEN are you going to eat healthy? WHEN are you going to save money?  WHEN are you going to make new friends or get out of your rut?  Are these questions making your feel guilty or are they motivating you?  WHEN can be a motivating word that gets you up off of the couch and out into the life you want to live.  Stop being so afraid of new experiences and procrastinating.  WHEN are you going to stop being bossed around by your fear?  WHEN are you going to take charge of the changes you want to make in your life and make those changes?  There is not better time than right now to get started.  You are reading this blog for a reason.  Get up and do something active about your goal or dream right now, even if it is making a post-it note and placing it on the door you go out of every morning.  Let the post-it note read,  “Do one thing to reach your goal today.”  Maybe you need a post-it note on your door to remind you of what your goals are and be sure to place a due date on each of them.  The word WHEN is an important tool for success.
